The setup, account setup, is easy and using the device is fairly easy. Worked great when I used it offshore.

Nice device but the kicker is that you can’t do anything with it unless you get one of there pricey monthly subscriptions. Kind of overkill if you only need it for a week tops at a time.

Had to get it replaced by Garmin, new unit works marginally better. Only uses GPS and only turns on for short periods to conserve battery, so it can take 2-20 minutes for a fix and a message send, I think thats bad for an SOS device. It does connect ANT or bluetooth, so it should use the phones or watches GPS position if available (and probably uses multiple GPS systems for a faster lock)

PRIME IMPRESSIONI:

I hated this little thing. Using the unit itself was a real pain. I tried the ZOLEO and was much happier with it. You pretty much have to go with the unlimited plan with this InReach to be practical but I found the intermediate plan on the ZOLEO was more than enough and less expensive. Anyway the plans are not a deal breaker for me. The fiddly nature of the InReach was. Also battery life was poor with heavy use. So if you have to carry a USB battery bank, you dont save any weight with this at all.. Quite the opposite.

Strapped this on my (young-adult) kid who went hiking in Bolivia !! We were able to stay in touch using the app installed on a phone (iPhone, in this case). We could follow the progress of the hike through a website that was continually updated by the device. The battery lasted pretty well but we sent usb chargers, too. It is amazing that as long as this device can see the sky it can provide a way to be in touch anywhere in the world via text and the Garmin website.

Gave us peace of mind the whole trip in the back country. Kept us in touch with family.
