> 24 hourThe mini is a great device and an inexpensive insurance policy that saves lives and summons the calvary when needed. It doesnt lead you by the hand in the wilds. If you need that, stay home! It tells where you are, your loved ones that you are safe and, if you want, where you are on an internet accessible map. InReach got my friend off the PCT with a compound fracture in good order. Ive had difficulties communicating sometimes but that was because the satellites were blocked by trees or canyon walls. Contrary to what other reviewers say, my messages have gotten through always though sometimes delayed by aforementioned obstructions. If you dont want to pay for breadcrumbs, turn them off. This is an economical system. I found syncing with my phone easy and reliable....be sure to check your mini before you go out for updates. Then you may need to reconnect bluetooth and remember that theres no connection until the phone app is open. I owned the InReach SE for years and have found my mimi to be more stable and reliable. I was wrong to think Garmin would screw it up.

Oh, That Guy
> 24 hourBought this as a backup communication device for my daughter, who’s 1,000 miles away at school. I preconfigured it for her, and got a unit for me too. You can message device to device and (i believe) avoid depending on the internet for connectivity. $12 a month subscription and $0.50 is worth it if you lived through the complications immediately after 9/11. Unit is TINY. Much easier to use once paired to a phone - but works fine without it. Can take several minutes to acquire a satellite- and did take a few minutes to upload a message. That’s fine for if/when it is needed. Garmin website for the service is clunky. Had to use a different browser to setup a second service account. But again, the thing does what I need it to do - and will (should) work anywhere on the planet. Maybe good to take on a cruise as well. I like being independent with regard to being able to communicate - this gives me freedom.

> 24 hourSadly, returned this. Couldn’t figure out how to make it work. Bummer bc I need a device like this for hiking in remote areas. I may end up buying the same item again but will have to get it from REI or someplace with customer service assistance to help me complete set up so I can actually use it.

> 24 hourWe used this in alaska and found the phone interface to be unintuitive and clunky. Then when my credit card expired, instead of just cutting it off when the payment didnt process, they kept the service on and then sent the 65 dollar charge (which became $81.19) to a collection agency after 30 days . I will be selling this device on eBay and will be sure to never purchase another garmin product in the future.

> 24 hourSpotty connection in the mountains where I hike. Garmin charged me another year of service after I deleted my Garmin account, and won’t let me activate unless I pay for a year of service when I didn’t even have a Garmin account. I can’t even give this locked brick away. Never again will I buy another Garmin product. Poor customer service.

> 24 hourNice device but the kicker is that you can’t do anything with it unless you get one of there pricey monthly subscriptions. Kind of overkill if you only need it for a week tops at a time.

> 24 hourGreat. Owned for a year and satisfied. Its accurate and simple while delivering a peace of mind. Just ordered two more for my younger brothers as I believe such products should be attached at the hip of spring breakers that like to travel.
