09-11-2024If you are wanting to use this modem for T-Mobile, look else where. It is NOT unlocked as advertised and does NOT support T-Mobile 4G/LTE GSM networks. This modem is locked to Cricket and uses crappy proprietary Cricket software. Despite all the positive reviews saying it works with T-Mobile, it doesnt. I wish it did, I wasted my time with this.

> 3 dayI have a Raspberry PI 3B (running Raspbian Stretch). I was tethering it to an iphone 6 over USB/hotspot with a Mint Mobile SIM. This setup worked great, but I was tying up an iphone just for the RPI and every once in a while I would need to restart the iphone (it didnt happen that frequently actually maybe once every 5 weeks). I have the RPI configured as a WIFI hotspot for a security camera at a remote location with no other internet besides what is provided through the iphone and the data plan I had there. So the internet service via the iphone was the only way for the security camera to communicate out to the world (me) and for me to communicate back to it (using reverse SSH - for those who want to know...). This worked fine but was a pain if I needed to restart the iphone, say due to a power outage causing the battery to run down. Id have to drive to the location, and restart the iphone, re-enable the hot spot - you get the idea, it was a pain. I figured there had to be a way to use my Mint Mobile SIM (which is on the T-Mobile network) directly with the RPI. This USB modem does the trick. I saw another review state they got it working with qmicli (which is a command line interface to configure a qualcomm based usb modem), I didnt get that working with qmicli as I couldnt immediately find instructions. Fortunately I found another blog post that walks through setting up this exact modem on the RPI. All you need is your carriers APN. In my case for Mint Mobile it was wholesale. I cant post the l-i-n-k so find the instructions by the following method below: Perform a search for raspberry-pi-with-huawei-E397u-53-dongle-metro and youll find the instructions Once you get the instructions, Its pretty straight forward. In the end where it explains how to update the DNS service, I replaced it with the google dns which is 8 8 8 8 and 8 8 4 4. Everything works great, I can get like 5-22Mbit/s up and down which is perfect for my needs (and considering the device is in a bad T-Mobile area, Im happy with that). Now when I reboot the PI, internet comes back up - no iphone needed :)

> 3 dayWorked great for me. Have it connected to my Joying Android head Unit in the jeep. Had to root the unit to be able to use PPP3, but it definitely does what it is supposed to do. Took away one star because it takes quite a bit of time for it to dial out and connect. Other than that gives me exactly what I was looking for. I dont have to use my phone as a hot spot. Have this connected for data and the phone connected for BT / Phone

> 3 daySo far, one day of testing, this device works perfectly for what I needed it for. 1. Works perfectly on TMOBILE LTE. I only get 5MB with it, but the connection to my location isnt great. 2. Works mostly perfectly in my ASUS router (RT-AC3200-Merlin FW) for backup WAN. This is what I really wanted this device for. The ASUS picks it up and requires basically no configuration to work out of the box. Fails over pretty successfully, Ive had at least one glitch where I had to reset the router, but its worked every other time. As an added bonus it has an external antenna port if youre looking to use it somewhere that an external antenna might be necessary. The manual claims this is used for out RF testing, so YMMV on using it successfully as an external antenna, but its worth mentioning.

> 3 dayThis device does NOT work with Tmobile sims. I have an older Rocket 1 Sim, a brand new prepaid kit sim, and two sims from older ZTE hotspots. The device itself is blacklisted from the tmobile network. I get a page redirect to Tmobile that says Your data plan does not work on this device. Click *here* to sign up for a new data plan. Clicking the link takes me to Were sorry, we are not able to help you with a plan change here. Please check my.tmobile.com or call customer care to complete this service charge. Additionally, the cricket connector software (which works great by the way) opens a Cricket purchase page. Which does not resolve since the device is not on a network. I re-enabled my Desktop connection to diagnose. Worked on it for an hour or so. All other Sims with all other devices brought me to the tmobile page to reactivate or pay more. They want your money for sim data. Not for this device. I didnt even bother calling in. They know the score, its an obvious blacklist. This device may work with other carriers sims - but not tmobile. Additionally, the IMEI pasted into Crickets BYOB check showed it was NOT compatible. There was a number missing. Not going to play guessing games on this one. Will return for true Tmobile rocket usb device. *edit* Changing from a 2 star to a 4 star. I had to learn what an unlocked modem actually meant. This device is blocked from Tmobile itself, but subcarriers like Simple Mobile work just fine. I am doing some testing with carriers in my Florida market. Simple Mobile does work. 9D 5.5U 9/24/2017 *edit again* Tested an H20 Sim. Buying worked even better than Simple. ATT network instead of Tmobile. Put on the $10 plan which is supposed to not have data, but it worked. 7D 1.5U *edit 9/28/17* Got my Lyca Mobile sim in the mail. Activation required a handset, so I had to flip them to run * codes. Then activate the sim on their website before I could even get to plan purchase. $19 was the min and that was for 100 MB data. Plans did not seem comparable to others on the market, so I mothballed the sim. Changed review to five stars. I love unlocked USB modems! May play around with other sims and data plans but we sort of already have a North America winner in ATT and TMOB with H2O and Simple. Simple has a Walmart partnership and you can grab top-up cards from anywhere, as well as online, easily.

> 3 dayThis review is a technical solution review for someone who has the following issues: 1. Bought a Chromebook with no Sim Card slot 2. Has a grandfathered unlimited cell phone plan on a carrier that refuses tethering and USB tethering (cheat workarounds) only work on a Windows machine, MacOSX, Chrooted w/ Crouton / Linux set-up running Windows virtual machine or the likes 3. Overall, loving your chromebook but feel isolated when at a park/beach/public scene with no available wifi in sight. The above--was literally my life after making the switch from a Windows box to a Chromebook. It depressed me when I was on the road and needed wifi (with ZERO available) to do some of my design work. I was like, Great! Shouldve NEVER bought this thing! But, then I was inspired and me being the natural problem solver I am--Found Unlocked 4G LTE Huawei Modem. Perfect! Its small, fits in a bag, and it speaks ChromeOS. Winning! But, damn....AT&T wont give me a data SIM thats unlimited to go with my plan. Soooooo....I found a close second for pennies, called Ting (you can get it on Amazon and link it to your prime account for monthly payment). Ting is amazing--you only pay per the 100MBs you use. If you dont use 100, you dont pay. that month. 0$ -Simple plan. Simple USB modem. Chromebook disaster averted and still my beneficial lightweight computing transformation. This modem is amazeballs to say the least-- plug N play. Doesnt get any easier! I hope my crisis helps others solve their wifi-chromebook disaster. <3 Happy Droiding (run from Mac and Windows while you still can!)
