> 3 dayHaving learned many years ago the importance of not only backing up my data (with encryption) but also copying my entire hard drive (I use a MacBook Air), I have regularly made copies of both onto external hard drives. I wanted the additional security of solid state, thus decided to try out Samsung. I purchased this particular external hard drive on the recommendation of a recent article in Mac Life.

> 3 dayThe SSD component of the fusion drive in our 2012 iMac was failing. After reviewing the time consuming installation procedure to replace the failing SSD, I decided to try an external drive. Since Thunderbolt 2 is poorly supported and expensive, that meant going with a USB 3.0 compatible SSD. I did disk read/write performance comparison tests between this Samsung T5 using USB 3.0 and the working internal 5400 rpm hard drive. The internal hard drive achieves read/write speeds of 80-90MB/s. The Samsung T5 achieves read write speeds of 440 MB/s. I installed MacOS Catalina on the Samsung and migrated all the content to the new drive. I split the fusion drive into the separate physical drives. the failing SSD is unused. The working 1TB 5400 rpm HD will be used for backups and large file storage. So forget Thunderbolt 2, and forget the hassle of pulling apart your imac and buying over priced components from OWC. A 2021/2022 portable SSD that is USB 3.0 compatible will be much faster than the original fusion drive and provide 1 Terabyte of fast storage 9x more than the 128GB SSD of the fusion drive. This is a great upgrade to any older mac that supports USB 3.0.
