Awesome projector with great image. It also has plenty of features that the more expensive projectors have.

I absolutely loved this projector when it was new. It was an upgrade from the BenQ W1070. The picture quality was top notch, bright, and crisp. The installation was simple as it worked great with the ceiling mount I already had installed. I removed the W1070 and slipped the HT3550 right into place. The love affair is quickly coming to an end though as the pixels are dropping like flies. It started with one off to the side and I was okay with that. Then a second died, then a third, forth.... Its up to six now and its becoming unbearable especially when its a really dark scene in whatever Im watching. For the price of this item, I would expect it to last a longer than it has.

It is pretty noisy. The picture is great for the price point but after only 2 days I lost a portion of the screen to bad pixels. Update: after receiving my second unit, it came used. Nothing was in the original packaging and when I turned it on the lamp had 194 hours of run time on it. It sucks because it takes 37 days AFTER the return is received before you get a refund. So now I am out thousands of dollars and need to order a 3rd unit. I feel it only fair that I have to drop my review to 1 star.

I just received this projector yesterday and am incredibly disappointed in the whole user experience as well as all the bugs. For a $1500 projector I expected something way more functional than the Epson my housemates bought for $800. Something seems to be wrong with the HDR mode as sometimes the entire image looks like it has a green overlay on it (EDIT: I fixed this with a software update). Additionally, when HDR mode is on something inside the projector makes a horrible grinding/buzzing sound, like old computer sounds from 15 years ago. The green overlay isn’t always there and the buzzing sound isn’t as well, so there has to be some issue with it. Edit: here is a link to a video of the sound coming from the projector. https://youtu.be/LHJC_qN9Ils Does not play sound from my Sony Blu-Ray player for some reason even though my housemates projector has no problem. Input switching is incredibly slow as are changing some other settings. Sometimes I’ll switch back to my AppleTV 4K and the projector won’t even recognize the input, so I have to restart the projector (which takes five minutes) just to get the AppleTV to show up. I reached out to BenQ yesterday and am waiting to hear back so I can update this review. But if you’re stuck at home right now and are looking for a projector, don’t get this one because it’s not worth the hassle, even without the bugs it’s still a pain in the butt. EDIT: it has been almost a week and I have received no response from BenQ. The image quality is nice, but the whole experience so far has been way too frustrating for something I was so excited to get. Now I feel like a sucker for spending this much money on something that should have been way better. Why does it say “stream Netflix and Prime”? There is no smart TV interface, it’s just saying you can plug in a streaming device through the input. So with that statement it’s clear every statement they make about this projector is just meaningless marketing hype. I expected so much better from BenQ.

I couldn’t wait for this baby to arrive from the Amazon Warehouse. It came a day early to my jubilee, and was nicely packaged in its original box. I was upgrading from my trusty old Viewsonic projector for outdoor movie night. There are a ton of reviews with specs and such, so I’ll just give you a layman’s version. The picture was simply astounding; both animation (Raya) and live movies. Granted, I’m coming from a 1080i, but the clarity of the image on my 4K JWSIT big screen (135’), blew me away. It exceeded my expectations. I drooled for the first three hours of viewing. The setup was easy, as well as slight adjustments to my viewing liking. The fan was never even noticeable. And the speakers were pleasantly adequate. My last projector sounded strained as I elevated the volume, but the ht3550 gave off an enjoyable, full sounding soundtrack. No sound glare as I increased the volume. I set this up with my son’s ps5 to take advantage of the 4K blu ray. Like watching movies outside for the first time. This is what I’ve been missing? I’d probably be crying if I wasn’t so elated by the upgrade. Gaming was just as amazing to watch. I noticed no lag, but we only played one person play. He did hop on fortnite with a couple of friends for an hour or so, but he had no issues that I could see. The ht3550 is truly a topnotch projector. I look forward to making it my own!

    Greater than one week

I used to drool over the 4k projectors and think to myself that it will be forever before I am ready to spend enough money on one. I owned the HT2050 until the HDMI ports got toasted by a nearby lightning strike and loved it. I had looked at the newer models from Benq but was not impressed with certain things they took away from them or added to them. I stumbled upon the 3550 just as it was being released and my jaw hit the floor. I finally had time to get it hooked up on a 180 screen with 4K and it blew me away! I didnt want to go to bed last night or work today. Just wanted to lock myself in the media room. I dont think you can find a better projector for the price of this one. My only complaint thus far is that it seems a bit loud during quiet scenes, but I am sitting under it.

I upgraded from the HT2550 I bought last year and I could not be happier. The HT2550 was a great intro to bringing affordable 4K projectors to the home but BenQ has outdone themselves with the new HT3550!!! Picture quality has improved vastly which is didn’t think was possible. This unit TRULY rivals the theater in ever way and that makes me happy to say as a lifelong cinephile. This is DREAM of a machine. Colors and clarity and unreal for a projector. Literally looks like I’m watching a giant Samsung or LG flat panel. Also throwing in the smooth motion feature has been one of my favorite additions. I get why some people aren’t a fan, and it definitely doesn’t work for all movies/shows. But throwing this feature on low goes that much future to improving the immersion of the whole experience. The smoothness brings LIFE to the picture in a unique way. BenQ must have updated the sound card as well because there much more clarity, space and deeper bass coming from this unit. My only gripe is that I can’t switch between sound modes. My “Sound Mode” feature is basically greyed out and stays on the default setting. It’s fine because it still sounds great but I’d love to test out the other modes as well. The unit is much fast that the HT2550 as well. Handshakes faster and menus aren’t as sluggish. This is a TRUE a cinematic experience for your home. For this price I can’t see it getting any better. Thanks BenQ!!!

This projector stopped working within the first week. Was able to return it and bought another projector instead.

Good picture. Some cooling fan noise. But the biggest flaw is the lens cover. Like the previous models, BenQ tethers a piece of plastic that you can use to cover the lens manually. This creates a problem: you have to be extremely careful not to change the position of the machine if it is hung from the ceiling. I wish BenQ could install a simple mechanism that allows the user to use remote control to cover the lens after done watching. Update: The auto keystone is a disaster. Even if you disable it, it is somehow still on, fighting with my manual adjustment. One star now.
