The Haunting [Blu-ray]

A group of investigators are assembled to stay the week at the supposedly haunted Hill House in order to determine whether there is any paranormal activity occurring in the isolated mansion, but creaky floorboards and distant moans are only the start of the odd happenings that befall them. Unlike the other spook shows of the time (particularly in the cases of William Castles gimmicky HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL or 13 GHOSTS), Robert Wises THE HAUNTING reveals very little on screen, opting for subtly implied horrors and psychological terror over full bodied apparitions or cheap thrills. One could even argue that Hill House isnt even haunted, but rather that the four would-be ghost hunters are either giving in to their overactive imaginations or possibly suffering from a group psychosis. As we explore each of the characters, we find various breaks in each of there personalities that could easily allow for such delusions. Even the tragic ending can be seen as a complete coincidence, just another ambiguity left for the viewer to decide upon. The low angled exterior shots and long tracking shots through the cavernous hallways also give the house itself an ominous life of its own, including a dark heart and breathing walls. While the smart script is competently acted and engaging, the intent focus on its characters, lengthy dialog, and lack of physical specters may surprise new viewers expecting a more visual experience. Best all time Horror Movie and very little special effects. Leaves most of it up to your imagination. Julie Harris does a stunning performance with a believable character. So much better than todays horror films, its like its in a class all by itself.

This is not usually my movie genre, but when I was a kid I used to watch this version of The Haunting (1963) when it was rerun on TV and it scared the heck out of me! What was good about it was the unusual characters vividly depicted and relatable; the attention to detail; the stark black and white visuals; the interesting and original plot; and what it left to the imagination. These days, everything is spelled out for you and shown in gory detail. Its much scarier and more fascinating when the viewer participates more. It makes the suspense palpable. Ive never seen a scary movie/psychological thriller done better.

Ive always thought all these black and white scare movies were totally stupid. But this one was the best black and white scare show Ive ever seen..I recommend this show to anyone who likes these kinds of movies..Hopefully the remake will be even better...

This is one of the truly scariest classic horror movies ever made! No blood and guts, no outrageous special effects, just a scary, SCARY movie that allows your imagination to freak you out! Love it!

I bought this movie because I remembered a special scene when I saw it as a kid. I satisfied my curiosity, but as far as 60`s science fiction movies go I feel it is just OK.

VERY SCARY film! The best ghost/haunting film ever made!

Well I dont normally write film reviews but Ive never been so enthusiastic about a film - Tha Haunting will scare the hell out of you.Personally sick of special effects and big name actors I have spent a lot of time trawling through old horror movies, some poor some good but I never realised how effective old black and white horror could be till I discovered this film. The acting is a bit stale, especially at the beginning with very unconvincing dialogue, but once the atmosphere kicks in you discover what this film is really about. With no special effects all the talent lies in the fantastic camera work combined with intelligent use of sound. The Haunting involves you like few other horror films because it relies on your own imagination. Pretty special effects are all nice eyecandy but thats the point - horror aint supposed to be pretty. Special effects make you go wow not aarrgghh!
