The Haunting [Blu-ray]

> 3 dayA staggeringly well made horror film. Even by todays standards it carries the weight of suspense and terror with simple design, gorgeous lighting and a lot of beautifully implied suggestion. It allows the mind to fill in the blanks way more horrifically than they could ever put on film.

> 3 dayThe first time I saw The Haunting was back in 2001, I was a lot younger than I am now, so when I recently purchased the DVD, soon as I saw the case I knew it was going to be just as good, if not better. You cant fully appreciate things as a child, now that Im an adult I have to say, this is a classic horror film. It has a realistic feel, no CGI or digital animation like the remake they did. The story is gripping and engaging, with a proper introduction at the beginning, you almost feel like youre right there in the film with them. Without giving anything away, overall I have to rate The Haunting five stars, not something I would do lightly. If youre looking for a good old fashioned horror film, youd find everything and more in The Haunting. The DVD was packaged well, Ive had no problems with the disc, and Im enjoying the film over and again when the mood strikes.

> 3 day... the most horrifying film Ive ever seen (and Ive said this for nearly 40 years now!). Ive hated horror films since I was a child. The Haunting is no exception, except -- I also love it. Ive found, whenever I see a film (or play) adapted from a book Ive read, Im usually somewhat disappointed because what Im shown is not as (good/beautiful/horrifying ...) as what the authors words triggered in my mind at the time I read them. Robert Wise, with The Haunting, succeeds so well where other less adept directors fail or offer pap as art precisely because he allows the viewer his own perceptions, and trust me -- theres nothing scarier than whats in YOUR mind.

> 3 dayVery nice Blu-Ray transfer. Im seeing things I never noticed before on the VHS or DVD version. The Blu-Ray version is slightly on the grainy side, but that is a very minor annoyance. All in all, an improvement on anything Ive seen in the past. No frills special features, though, the same as on the DVD. A classic horror flick!

Greater than one weekWithout all of the special effects this movie realizes what you dont see is more scary than what you see. Great movie to watch and get your pants scared off. ;) A lot better than so many of todays movies

> 3 dayI know Im going against the grain here, but I watched about 45 minutes of this movie, and I couldnt stand it. Slow pacing was not the primary problem; the problem was that there wasnt one remotely likeable character in the movie. The women were over-dramatizing dependent twits, one man was a completely unlikeable cad, and the other was unflappable and absolutely boring. The gender roles were so ingrained in every aspect of the characters that the movie could serve as an instruction manual on why the feminism/womens rights movement was so important. The one mildly interesting aspect was observing how much closer the acting in this movie is to stage acting than modern film acting. But, when the characters are so vastly unlikeable and impossible to connect with, slow pacing becomes a huge problem. The creepy occurrences become far less creepy when the women are way overdramatizing their reactions rather than playing believable parts. I tried to like it, but I really failed to find anything worthwhile in this movie- so much that I turned it off after 45 minutes. What an overrated stinker.

Greater than one weeki first saw this when i was a kid and thought it was scary, but that was when i was:a)to young to know better and b)listened to what everyone else said in that you must like this.well, now that im 34 years of age i have my own opinions, different tastes and am smarter.this movie didnt fool me at all.yes i love horror movies and no i dont need blood and guts and brutal murders for me to think if its scary or not.the haunting is known for being scary without really showing you anything.there is one thing right about that in that you hardly ever do see anything, and when you do its an hour and a half into the damned thing, probably the only good thing about the enire film.i watched it like i do all of my horror films,at night, with all the lights off,and cranked.yes the noises of banging throughout the house are cool but they are too few throughout.i had heard all the hype surrounding this film and how great and scary it is,boy was i disappointed.this goes up there with other overrated horror films like rosemarys baby, scary maybe in their time but laughable today.if you want a scary haunted house film that noone has heard about check out a 1976 film called BURNT OFFERINGS.hell even the movie HOUSE was scarier than this and its a comedy.i cant stress enough how disappointed i was in the haunting because i bought into all the hype surrounding it just to get let down once again.the director doesnt even try to make you care for these characters.the lead character played by julie harris automatically comes off as a spoiled bitchy brat, the psychic is cruel, the other guy only cares about making money off the house, and about the only decent person in here is the head researcher who doesnt seem to care much for his wife and flirts with harris throughout.as i said earlier you have to wait an hour and a half for things to get real interesting.its almost as if this were some 60s soap opera.than when it ends is that when the biggest disappointment hit me,because i realized that i had been robbed of another 2 hours of my life.NOTHING HAPPENS!

> 3 dayThe scariest movie ever without seeing a ghost! The fact that it was done in black in white was brilliant!
