For decades, even with however-many ghost movies have been made in the interim, this film has stood the test of time, as surely one of the scariest films I have ever seen! Certainly, in youthful years, the stuff of haunting nightmares. ~ Here, NOTHING is seen, as would be the case today, with most unimaginative and uncreative directors and writers in effete Hollywood, employing basically the same-tired old familiar techniques and image-scenes to induce sudden-fright. What you could call the sudden, unexpected (though all too-expected) Boo-effect. — In this movie, the tension increases, and FEAR builds, in what is NOT-SEEN. The Haunting entity or force, is just heard and felt. Vicariously through the character(s), you experience the terror of the unknown and unseen. ~ Truly brilliant movie, whatever the written story was like. And personally, I can attest, very effective in affect! ~ Yet also with a very sad note that runs through the film... — Five stars in 1963. FIVE-stars still, in 2023! The film is simply, well, — terrifyingly Haunting!

I have loved this movie since I was a child. So much so that I read the book when I was 12. Julie Harris is phenomenal. In my humble opinion this is more of a psychological thriller than horror movie. My daughter loves this movie, too.

Not much in the way of special effects by todays standards, but they did a lot with what they had. I think this is still one of the best haunted house movies ever made.

I still remember the first time I saw this in the theatre. It was one of the scariest Id ever seen and is still one of the best IMO. The remake cant hold a candle to this one.

I have this video, and every time I watch it, I want to see beyond the square screen, but nothing is there. It is a must for widescreen. A California cable channel showed this film in widescreen for a Halloween special a few years ago. I only saw parts of this version but what I saw made it seem alltogether different. The lighting is so well done, it allows the viewer to use their own fears to create faces in the shadows. This is my favorite ghost story film other than What Lies Beneath. Oh, one more thing, unlike the resent cool funhouse remake, the 1963 version is most like Shirley Jacksons novel The Haunting of Hillhouse. I cant wait for the widescreen version on DVD!

We received the movie in record time and it was in excellent condition. As far as the movie goes I think this original film by Wise is the best. It doesnt have wild special effects, but it certainly is scarry.Dont let the Black & White film turn you away its a classic.

I looked up this movie tonight and was telling my wife about it. I saw it when it first came out and I still remember the little noises, the plusating door, and the jiggling door handle! I showed the trailer to my daughter and she came back a few minutes later to tell me that she had moved her little sister into her bed for the night. Hey, this movie sticks with you. The acting is superb! Julie Harris is absolutely a head trip for the viewer. I hope the release in April 2005 is a good quality one. I will get this, I am just not sure when I will watch it except for one thing: it will be early in the day to give me time to get over it before night fall, when there wont be anyone to help if I call out. A truely scary movie it you have any imagination at all.

I still sleep with my hands under the covers! (Watch this classic and youll see why.)This is a marvelous movie that still affects viewers 40 years later. Without overblown digital renderings, bloody offings, or visualized goons, this film manages to produce quickened pulses and goose bumps on just about everyone I show it to. The house itself is much more satisfying than the one in the remake. The interior sets are convincing and atmospheric, and the real exterior (shot at Ettington Park, England) is perfect. Julie Harris best role. I hope to see it on DVD soon, along with that other perfect ghost story The Innocents.
