After reading many poor reviews of other plug cutters, I decided to spend the extra few dollars for this one. Im glad I did, as it seems to do the job well. I cut a couple dozen plugs out of Butternut (havent cut anything hard with it yet), and I got pretty clean results. I gave it 4/5 stars only because it came covered in a black sooty coating, which was a bit of a mess. I know its to protect from rust or whatever while in storage, but an oil or wax coating would be nicer. Not a big deal.

I used the 3/8 plug cutter on cypress, which is a fairly soft wood. It left a good finish on the plug with no tearing which would have been a problem on soft wood had the tool not been sharp. I was unable to use the chamfering feature at the top of the tool, though, as the taper was too steep and if I cut too deeply with the tool the plug diameter would be too small for the hole I was plugging. All in all its a fine tool and should give me many years of service.

Dont bother purchasing this junk. BURNS no mater the speed. No edges, period.

I used this to cut plugs for use on my Trex deck --using a scrap piece of Trex decking. It worked perfectly. One hint: This plug cutter is designed to leave a narrowed top to then invert for easy insertion into wood. So, for use in Trex, do not cut to full depth to avoid the tapered top. With Trex you need the full top to match the Trex.

This guy works great! I had to cut a bunch of plugs for a cumaru deck (cumaru is a Brazilian hardwood that has a 50+ year lifespan but that’s a different story). I tried using a cylindrical plug cutter but, whether I cut fast or slow, made more smoke then plug and by the time I got one cut it looked more like a guinea pig turd than a wooden plug. I picked this one up and it tore through making 70+ plugs in no time and was as sharp as it started out as. I have been very impressed by this plug-cutting but and would highly recommend it do you anybody. It is well worth the price!

I bought this to cut plugs for Trex decking. They cut fine, but have very little taper so putting them into screw holes is difficult. I followed instructions to cut from the non-finished surface to the finished surface, but still ended up with blisters trying to hold them for tapping in. Again, the plugs are nice but another half degree of taper would improve the design.

The worst plug cutter Ive ever used. Tons of chatter and the resulting plugs were smaller than 3/8.

Great plug maker. Recommend using a drill press to ensure they are all straight and uniform. Take your time and let the tool cut the plug. Dont force it!

This cuts perfect plugs with a chamfered edge. Easy to use with drill press, running at 620 RPM. I wouldnt try to use this with a hand held drill.
