Liked that it was a sturdy board book that a one year old can’t ruin

This is such a beloved, classic story to me. My Mommy used to read it to me as a child, and I have the pleasure of reading it to my daughter now. If I could find Madeline wallpaper and all sorts of other Madeline paraphernalia I would most certainly decorate my daughters nursery in that fashion. I am ecstatic that Ludwig Bemelmans son is continuing his Madeline legacy... Although, I have yet to read Madeline and the Cats of Rome (I did browse the fantastic pictures in the bookstore though).

Ludwig Bemelmans MADELINE first appeared in the early 1950s. It was a hit then and generations later, it still evokes that, Please read it to me again, in children. Or better yet, its one of those books that they later read to themselves. Although most young kids dont know about orphans and living in an orphanage, they immediately bond with little Madeline. Children enjoy its cadence and rhyming (not at all like Dr. Seuss books). Its less obvious and a bit more sophisticated. Depending on a childs age and cognitive level, this book can go from simply entertaining (1) to broadening a childs knowledge (2), to higher order reading skills (3). Examples: (1) Reading a story; (2) Whats an orphanage? Where is France? Do children speak English there? Tell me, what is the big, grey thing on the books cover? (3) Do you think the girls are all happy to share a big bedroom? If you were Madeline, how would you feel? Why do we have an appendix? Taken at face value, this classic is a lovely tale. But, it can also be a springboard for meaningful conversations.

This CD has an extra 15 minutes of cute french songs at the end. My children love the story and the extra musical part.

This isnt an ebook! Its just a cheep scan of a paper book. Its so hard to read, you have to zoom in to each page. That breaks the flow of reading. Very disappointing.

I ordered this book to bring to a baby shower - I’d read Madeline as a child and the art is so iconic. But I returned this book and got them something else at the last minute, for a few reasons: -My copy that was shipped to me was torn by a sticker in the packaging -There is a slur on the back cover that I didn’t realize would be there - times have changed -I realized this is the book that gave me a lifelong fear of appendicitis that was especially strong in my childhood, and I remember wishing I had never read about such a thing that instilled this fear in me, so I didn’t want to pass that on to another kid

This was my favorite book as a child, and I was so excited to find it as a board book so I can share it with my little toddler niece. Its beautiful and Im so very happy.
