House of Dark Shadows (DVD)

This movie is very good. It is sort of like the TV series but then it goes off and does different things. They were able to do stuff in the movie that they could not do on the small screen. All the actors do a very good job.

Well made! Well written! Well acted! Well directed! Dan Curtis should have stopped after this movie.

Dark Shadows as it should have been really is the best way to describe this movie. The original soap was a disaster of over-acting, bloopers, bad makeup, chintzy sets, and all of the worst things you associate with a low-budget, rushed production. Having said that Ill confess that as a teenager I watched it faithfully, breathlessly going from cliff-hanger to cliff-hanger. The thing I enjoyed most about this movie was to have discovered that the actors who so painfully over-acted in the TV show, when given half a chance could actually do a decent job of it -- more than that, really. Even Grayson Hall, whose rendition of Julia Hoffman was so ridiculously over-done in the soap, managed to make a good showing in this movie. The big disappointment was that Barnabas ended as he began, a vicious, conscienceless, half-demented vampire. Id have liked it better if hed managed to undergo a redeeming change of heart at the end, but, well, he did get what he deserved. Clearly Dan Curtiss audience was the TV shows diehard fans, since you really do need a familiarity with the original show to place things into context, but for those of us who raced home from school each afternoon to watch Dark Shadows, it was well worth seeing.

One of the best, Gothic horror at its best

I love this series and enjoyed it as a youth. I own The Beginning 1-6. Now what do I buy to continue the series?

I had seen this movie several before on VHS and was a fan of it. The movie features everyone that was on the TV Serial. Jonathan Frid (Barnabas) is as creepy and menacing as ever. This is a pretty decent movie for fans of Dark Shadows!

This and Night of Dark Shadows was last available on laserdisc and VHS . These are the feature films that were done at the height of the Dark Shadows craze. The quality of the video isnt the best but its much better than my VHS copy. If your a fan or love cult classics buy these youll love both of em.
