It is very common to see older laptops running hot. The reason is thermal compound/paste drying out and not working properly. I have a i7 from first generation in Vaio (still regrets buying it), which runs pretty hot and is around 4 years old now. The laptop is running almost non-stop for more than 3 and 1/2 years. It was idling at 75-78 degree C. After applying the new compound, I have see the idle temp go down to approx 62-65. This is around 13 degree drop and is significant for the hardware. The fan noise has also come down a bit as the fan doesnt have to spin as hard as it had to earlier, to keep the temperature low. The application process is very simple. Dont discard your hardware just because it is too hot or shuts down due to high temperature. Give it a chance and a new life with Arctic silver.

I highly suggest this for any copper heatsinks. Never had a problem and keeps my CPU very cool for a 220w.

Great thermal paste for the price. Well known, easy to apply, good thermal conductivity. Ive applied it to many systems and never had any problems with it. Just make sure you apply it correctly. Cant go wrong for the price.
