I just adore this story. Its so imaginative and the magic system (if you can call it that) is so bizarre but it makes sense in the world theyre in. I understand its not for everybody. As the title indicates, it IS pretty visceral but I loved it. I cant wait to read his other book, Dead Boys, and I really hope he continues writing. The worlds he builds really take you on a trip. Just...be prepared for the ride.

    Dark and humorous.

Viscera takes place in a world built on body horror, and the characters are flawed and hurting, and the spirit of the book cares so deeply about the characters. I am not personally a fan of gratuitous gore; this book doesnt do that. The viscera in this book is what gives it room to be so compassionate towards characters who struggle with their bodies and the things their bodies can or cant do and the way their bodies make them feel. The worldbuilding in this book pulled me in and the characters kept me there. Their introductions were compelling and their arcs over the course of the book made me love them.

This is an interesting book to say the least. For me, it defies description and it is best you read it and judge for yourself. It is a vision hard to describe but possibly one of the most interesting I have read in a long time, a roller coaster to be sure. Yes, not a very helpful review but once you start to read, you will understand.

Gabriel Squalias first book, Dead Boys, is one of the best books Ive read in the last few years. Ive told pretty much everyone I know and many I dont know about it. If you havent read it, you should! It is only connected to Viscera by the author. The reason I bring it up is the high expectations it gave me for Viscera. Luckily for me my high expectations were met and I really loved it! It has elements of fantasy, horror, adventure, and many eviscerations. Loved all the characters. The good, bad, and the inbetween. Wonderfully fleshed out and interesting. I loved the world building. There are a lot of different religions, sects, magic and more to learn about. Its so naturalistic and flows with the story wonderfully. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading fiction. Pretty sure this will be my favourite read of 2017 and Ill be busy recommending this to everyone!

This book is amazing. If you like books thatll make your skin crawl and make you care about questionable characters, pick this book up. Itll make your insides feel all squishy and itll make you cry at least once. A wonderful discussion of Queer communities in such a fleshed (hehe) out fantastical setting. A+, youll be sorry if you dont read this.

Not for the faint of heart but so richly written it is worthy attention. Gabriel takes the reader to another world with characters both human and inhumane and managed to hit us in the gut with images of our own world as woeful as it could be. This book offers a lot to think about and isnt that what all great writers offer in the end.

The world created for the story is confusing at best. Was there ever a plot? Not a book I will recommend.
