Back in the day I taped this off HBO and our family watched it over and over. Funny and heartwarming. This was Jonathan Silvermans debut and he is great as the teenage Jewish kid growing up in Brooklyn in the years before WWII. The family deals with their personal conflicts and social issues, but there isnt anything preachy about the message. The ensemble cast turns in a wonderful performance and the writing is, well, Neil Simon. Translated beautifully on the big screen.

So glad I watched it again. Just as great today as it was so many years ago. Terrific movie.

This is one of my favorite feel-good films with nostalgic quips of ethnic New York families. Silvermans teenager besotted with the female form is so typical of male puberty and adds another hilarious touch to the already saturated comedy. This film is a prize!

Not as good as I remember it, but there were still good scenes and funny parts. I think it came across more as a play, and maybe it should have stayed on Broadway. I thought the acting was a little too theatrical and the characters were playing to a live audience. Its definitely a movie to watch again, but just not in the foreseeable future.

I love this movie! An engrossing comedy with great realism. Makes you appreciate the ups and downs of teenage years. Even though the setting is the 1930s, this story would be funny and rewarding in any generation.

This is a classic favorite of mine and Ive watched it too many times to count. A look into a typical family during that time period. Always makes me smile. Actually this is the second copy I purchased. I wore out the first! Enjoy.

I love this movie. It is humorous and shows a much simpler time. Also I definitely see where Ferris Beuller may have taken some techniques from this movie such as the main charachter talking to the audience.

One of my favorite movies...I could watch it again and again and am glad I will be able to do so...funny storyline (Neil Simons adolesence???)...great acting, just funny, funny, funny...

Based loosely on playwright/screenwriter Neil Simon"s own life, "Brighton Beach Memoirs" focuses on aspiring writer Eugene Jerome and his large Jewish family in their overcrowded Brooklyn home in 1937. His parents work and worry and meddle into everyone else"s lives -- and they can always find enough to keep them in a tizzy: Eugene, as far as everyone is concerned, has recently become a bit too fascinated by the fairer sex, with much of his attention fixated on his dishy cousin, a would-be Broadway dancer. His older brother works at a blue-collar job and has run up a big gambling debt. And his widowed aunt (much to Mrs. Jerome"s consternation) is considering a romance with the Irishman across the street.
