The Road to El Dorado / Sinbad: Legend of Seven Seas / Joseph: King of Dreams

Greater than one weekThe Road to El Dorado is bright and bouncy and keeps up the energy throughout. I loved the story and the way it was told. Two scoundrels sneak aboard a ship bound for the New Lands and find themselves in their search for gold. Sinbad has an equally energetic re-telling and it s very good. You are captivated by the monsters and adventures he and his crew encounter while searching for proof Sinbad was framed for a crime. Joseph is a religious myth fable that is OK.

> 3 dayOf these three movies, El Dorado is probably the most famous. Ive never loved it although characters Miguel and Tulio have a fun dynamic. Sinbad is slightly underrated, but not really essential among the sea of animated films out there. Its crazy to think Shrek came out around the same time as these movies, yet that series still feels pretty timeless and these films seem definitely like holdovers of 90s style Disney/animation. Personally when I bought this, it was for Sinbad.

> 3 dayDreamworks did two excellent animated features which seem to have been lost in the mists of time. One was The Road to El Dorado with Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline, as two comic adventurers, which has recently come out in blu-ray. The other is Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas, starring Brad Pitt as Sinbad, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the love interest, Joseph Fiennnes as the Prince/childhood friend, and Michelle Pfeiffer as the goddess of chaos who is the villain of the piece, trying to foment discord because thats what she does. The animation in this movie is excellent and very colorful. The story stresses the importance of loyalty, and there is some information about the early Greek cities and their Gods. There is plenty of action to keep kids interested and plenty of visual beauty despite the fact that it is an earlier animated film. The only problem is - wait for it - you will be lucky if you find a copy of it. It is able to be streamed from amazon.us - I didnt check. uk. Luckily I bought this when it first came out years ago, so I have a copy, but I bought a back up copy from uk (who had 3 copies at the time.) Im glad that there is a streaming version somewhere and also in this double feature. With its brilliant cast, the gorgeous scenery, the action-packed plot, Sinbad is one which also deserves to be out on blu-ray. Joseph is one I havent seen, so youre on your own there - strange juxtaposition of religions.
