I am a bit obsessed with my label maker and have labelled pretty much everything in sight since being given it by my amazing children for mothers day. Worth noting that it takes SIX AAA batteries which dont come included - I couldnt pop to the shop due to lockdown so had to wait 4 agonising days for mine to arrive before I could use it! The choice of fonts is good although admittedly I mostly just use the one, and it has loads of borders. Its very easy to use. Havet tried it with the ribbon yet, waiting for a special occasion. I bought some non-brother label tape in different colours and have found them to be perfect and its super easy to change tapes. So far no complaints at all, although I do think its a shame that it doesnt come as standard with a power adapter or rechargeable battery.

I have used DYMO products for many years, from the very basic model where it embosses the tape through stressing the material to change the colour to white, indeed I have one in my desk drawer, which is the basic model that has been around for 40 years or more, through to the much more complex labeller which we purchased for our administrative staff to assist them in making labels of various sizes, with up to three lines of text per label. This item from Brother is somewhere in between the basic and the high tech model we purchased for work. For £39.99 (21st April 2018) this item is high specced and is aimed for home use/small workshop; it has a hobby bias. Out of the wrapper, we were fortunate to have 6 AAA batteries to start using the item, although you can use for an adapter which we didnt have available and unless you intend to produce a huge number of lables, I would suggest would not be worth purchasing, although if you have one already with a suitable plug available there is that option - batteries last for ages for this type of item from my experience. Batteries fitted, we inserted the tape and it was ready for testing. The item was supplied with a 4 metre tape (huge) which produces gold text on a white background. I am being a bit picky, but black on white I feel would have been the better option for the starter pack, but I am picky! Using the machine was a breeze, the keyboard is positive and recorded the text I wanted to produce quickly and I printed a number of labels without reading the instruction leaflet - which after I read it suggests that this item can offer so much more than printing labels, it can also print of fabric labels, offers a range of additional options including printing on more than one line (wider tape required) print on fabric labelling material and offers a range of icons to enhance text. The screen is clear and permits checking text and design before printing, although it does not store like higher end items. All in all it is a great little printer, it is solidly made, there is a huge range of tapes available, the printer is easy to use and maintain and should last for years, in lots of ways it is outstanding and I am delighted to own it. There is one caveat though, in terms of price for consumables, it competes well with Dymo products, which in the long run will cost far more than this printer, however, I found that the printer itself, whilst well made was more expensive across the range over their Dymo competing product. I really feel that this is a 4.5 star item: it really is a great item and if you need the additional options which this item offers, you will not be disappointed, I just wished it was priced at 75-80% of the current price point as it would offer Dymo real competition.

This is an electronic label printer, similar to the Dymo range of LabelMaker devices, but aimed at the craft market. This means that it can print on a wide range of different materials - the included cassette is a white fabric ribbon on which the printer prints in gold, but it can also print on a variety of plain and patterned tapes, iron-on labels and the like. (Although that said, it is not obvious where you buy all of these from - Brothers online shop lists some, but not, for example, any more of the ribbon that is supplied with the printer. I should also add that it is not compatible with tapes for a Dymo labeller.) It is easy to use, with a full QWERTY keyboard and a reasonably intuitive menu system. There are a lot of options - 6 fonts, with various bold and italic options for each; accented characters, decorative frames, patterns and even emoji. It will print horizontally, vertically and upside down. A couple of niggles. First, the built-in tape cutter leaves far too much tape at the start of each label - there is around half an inch of surplus tape at the start of each print when then needs to be cut manually with scissors. Dymo printers manage not to do this - I assume it is a feature of Brothers cartridge design, but it is not ideal. Further, the styling on the printer itself seems to me to be clearly aimed at a female market; its all soft pastel purple with decorative curlicues around the edges. This seems unnecessary to me - it would be perfectly possible to have had a neutral design rather than something reminiscent of a womans electric shaver! Those niggles aside, its a nice printer; if you need to print on a variety of materials, its more flexible than the Dymo equivalent.
