Story and screenplay by the immortal Graham Greene. When one realizes the intellectual history of the older films, an added dimension is present and the spontaneous reaction to viewing is augmented by a discovery/delight element that confirms already held beliefs about what went on in the time period. Film is concerned with crime in immediate aftermath of WW2, and is a gritty depiction of English life therein, painting what seems to me to be (as I didnt live in England in 1948) a believable picture as there is a realistic and basic desire to express the truth. Very human in feel and plain/basic approach, the feeling of eavesdropping on some past terrain of action pervades the entire play. Fans of Jurassic Park may find Richard Attenborough unrecognizable due to forty-plus years of time. This will not prohibit enjoyment of his incredibly cold-blooded portrayal of a character who seems to have parted with his soul at age twelve. But the performance of young Carol Marsh as the deluded youth so desperately believing in her misplaced love for a human beast really takes the cake. I cant praise this depiction of dockside English life and pathetic criminal behavior enough.

Richard Attenborough (Brannigan) gives a tour-de-force performance as the emotionally and physically scarred gang leader Pinkie Brown, who courts and marries a local waitress (Carol Marsh, Horror of Dracula) he detests in order to stop her from testifying against him. Beautifully scripted by literary greats Graham Greene (The Third Man, The Fallen Idol) and Terence Rattigan (Separate Tables, The Browning Version) and wonderfully directed by John Boulting (Seven Days to Noon, I’m All Right Jack), Brighton Rock is utterly hard-bitten in tone and abundant in cruel ironies, right up to its well-judged, refreshingly cynical ending. Expressively shot by legendary cinematographer Harry Waxman (The Wicker Man, The Day the Earth Caught Fire), this masterful, evocative film noir is one of the finest British thrillers ever made.
